The mission of the outdoor classroom at DeKalb Alternative School is to instill a sense of purpose and direction in our students through experiential education. We are an alternative learning environment. Our students have been expelled from their regular schools and sent to our school for a semester or more. We try to give our students skills that will help them be successful when they return to their home schools.
The outdoor classroom can be a life-changing experience for our students. The outdoor classroom presents a group of students with obstacles that challenge them mentally and physically. The students work on self-awareness, communication, and problem-solving skills in a supportive environment that emphasizes individual performance as well as group involvement.
They have a chance to build character and leadership skills that will benefit them in the classroom, in school, and in real life. The ropes course gives students a chance to realize their potential and prepare for entering society as useful, productive adults
